Thank you to our sponsors:
Anita Dalton Award presented to Shirley Burhoe, Walmer Road Baptist Church, Toronto / sponsored by BRODART
President Arthur McClelland with
Shirley Burhoe
In October 1969 Anita Dalton of Forward Baptist Church in Galt met with ten church librarians and friends to form what was then the beginning of CLAO. Her amazing leadership and devotion to the library ministry led to the CLAO we know today.
This year’s winner of the Anita Dalton Award was a very simple choice. This person has been a member of CLAO for many many years, including working on the Executive for 7 years. She has been Conference Co-ordinator, has given workshops and done much more. She has also served as Vice-President, President, Past President of CLAO. She has been proof-reader for Library Lines. She has an amazing ability to work with all kinds of people and has an amazing talent to encourage many personalities to work together.
But of course to be a complete Anita Dalton winner, the candidate should also be active in their own church library. Our winner has worked in the church library for over 30 years. She creates colourful displays for the library (many of which have appeared in Library Lines). She also works with her Pastor and others at her church using her musical talent to help in Worship, her artistic talent in decorating, and so on. Her charming Name Tags created for CLAO have many a thing of utility a thing of beauty.
Her love of books and other expressions of ideas, helps her contribute so much to her work. She has raised the successful art of multi-tasking to an incredibly high level. Her happy smile and enjoyment of working in her church, her church library, her willingness to help when and where she is needed is a gift to us all.

Emma Austin Award presented to Erindale Bible Chapel, Mississauga, Marlene Foley, Head Librarian / Sponsored by BRODART
Emma Helen (Sullivan) Austin (1910-1998) helped build the Church Library Association (now CLAO) to 250 members, edited Library Lines, and organized the Spring and Fall conferences. The award named after her is for excellence in ministry to individual church libraries.
The winning library this year creatively revived the church library by utilizing different spaces in the church for different purposes: a children’s library in the Sunday School area; a reference library located upstairs; and the main library located in an accessible high traffic area on the ground floor. This library also weeded 14 boxes of materials which greatly improved the look of the collection, and greatly benefited the Christian Salvage Mission as well!

AWARD WINNERS — SOME NOTES OF THANKS
…[I would like to] express my deep thanks for the honour you have given me by presenting the Anita Dalton Award last Saturday. I held Anita in high esteem, and she began a work - along with other dedicated volunteers - that has impacted my life. Because of the Conferences and newsletters which have enlightened and given direction, I have been able to look after our Church Library at Walmer Road Baptist Church. The church leadership is quite supportive and I am grateful for that.
The work continues to challenge me as our congregation is constantly evolving. Presently we have many families with preschool children - a far different picture from even three years ago. We have few older children and teens at present, but those we have are treasured. We have very few seniors, even though I am now in that group.
Thank you again for your affirmation of what I attempted to do in CLAO. Please know I am fully in support of the organization, and will continue to help in any way I can.
